Air 5

daily ode no. 13 was a sketch. A mini logo for a new section here on the site. My top 5 things that were highlights of the day. Like a "gratitude" journal but not as serious sounding.

Air Five: "The motion of High-Fiving given by two people from a distance"
My air five for today was...
1-my baby nephew who loves music & rocks out anytime he hears it.
2-the sound of walking on snow.
3-tissues with lotion for my (hopefully) ending soon cold.
4-warm (not scalding) raspberry tea with honey
5-drawing w/my number2 pencil & handlettering.

daily ode no. 12 ... watercolor experiments

I usually use acrylic and gouache among other supplies. Not so much watercolor. It's been collecting dust in my studio remembering the good ol' days in high school and college when I used the medium primarily. I thought I'd add it back into my work. Playing with some patterns and some quickly painted butterflies.

daily ode no. 11

Another sketch from a thumbnail sketch inspired by the film. I was thinking of making it one image initially. But, I may just crop the images and make them each their own. The opening sequence of the movie is wonderful. Very calming. A little tidbit...apparently Audrey really disliked the taste of croissants. She wanted her character to be eating some other food but the director disagreed. The croissant stayed and the rest is history.  Til tomorrow.

Day 10

The start of another breakfast at tiffany's inspired image. The goal was to have a calendar for this year. The new plan is for next year. I have a few more tiny thumbnail sketches of of remaining odes to this movie planned out so I figure I'll finish the project little by little this year. I have plans for other movie odes and my own stories but I'd like to see this through. It is a good movie. Audrey and George were great. And the short story too. Just very different from each other. The movie and book though are not my favorite. Some special daily odes to be added sometime soon dedicated to that.

Day 9

The phone above was used as a prop. I wonder how many people own them anymore. Maybe businesses? Some of my moleskine sketchbooks. I currently have one in red.

A sketch of a character based on a class I taught. It was for 2-4 year olds. There were 9 of them and 1 of me... for 2 hours, twice a week, for 6 weeks...Yes I survived...barely. There was a boy who I wasn't sure was even two (maybe 1 1/2?). He was a handful. Even cleaning up was an adventure with him. Let's just say I turned my eyes away from him to help a student with their project when I heard splashing and lots of giggling. He was in the large sink trying to make bubbles with the hand soap, water filling past his converse sneaks, striped socks, shorts and just past the start of his t-shirt. "Just washing up" he said, echoing my words earlier. Our definitions were different. His mom came a few minutes later. He never returned to class. I think she decided to wait until next term when he would actually be 2 years old.

Day 8 ... sweet louise

One of my first assignments when I was a freelance photographer was of a local university's move-in day and the start of the fall semester. I was supposed to walk around between photographing events and take pictures of students for the school to use in their catalog, postcards and website.
The one student above was waiting for a friend to finish eating. They were going to practice basketball before basketball practice. He didn't see the humor. Not many people see my humor though. So, I continued and asked him about his tattoo hidden by his awesomely yellow arm band. He pushed the band to his wrist and said, "Sweet Louise, you mean?"
Without even asking he told me Sweet Louise was his grandmother. She was never called Louise without the sweet in front of it. The woman who raised him and the reason he was in college. She passed away and he wanted to take her to school with him somehow, ... "at least in ink" he said.
The Hallmark card moment was soon broken. Before I could get fully teary eyed his friend yelled over, "Keg party tonight, BooYah!"
Let's hope Sweet Louise didn't hear that.

Day 5 ... in the sketch phase

This first week of daily art is all about doodling, sketching, drawing, making marks on a piece of paper, not worrying about the result.

Day 4 ... sketchbook characters

I opened my sketchbook and after a few scribbles here and there met...

Mr. Turquoise Teal who is fond of turtlenecks, table tennis, top hats (his is at the dry cleaners) and timeless tunes.
The second person was in a hurry and I didn't catch their name.
On the third page I found Mademoiselle Papillon and a small friend of hers.

Day 2 ... at the drawing board

Getting used to adding work here everyday. I plan on adding daily paintings but for now some sketches.
